 Workshops?
« Thread Started on Aug 27, 2009, 1:10pm »

Are there any fan panels or workshops planned for this year's FACTS? I think having those would be a valuable addition to the FACTS programme.

What kind of topics would anyone like to see in a workshop? For me, I'd be very interested in a basic workshop on comic drawing or creative story writing, or something like a filk workshop or performances.

I'm planning a "Build a paperboard spaceship* together"-workshop in the fanvillage.

*could be Star Trek ships, Star Wars ships, Iron man,...

or like in Disneyland: draw a Mickey Mouse. But must be FACTS related: Star Trek Characters, Silly Spock, Andorians, Cylon, Darth Vader, Manga/Comic-babes,...

I'll see what I can do

Just wanted to say on behalf of my friends: Workshops would be a great idea.
my friends who don't cosplay saw the convention in a half hour, they wanted to do stuff but there weren't any workshops.

a few idea's:
-game workshops: wowtcg, magic, go, warhammer,...
-cosplay workshop
-screening of a movie/shortmovie
-japanese workshops: origami, kirigami, fighting, kimono making, ...

I like the idea of a bit more "Japan" in the fanvillage. Right now 80% seems to go to Star Wars fanclubs and that's about it. (There's some Trek there too... that's it.)
Something Japanese would be fun too. Or more fantasy...

Well as far as I can tell, FACTS was always very focused on Science Fiction. But even then there was so little to do this year...

aye indeed, i'd say leave the amount of sci-fi stuff as it is now and just add more japanese stuff and fantasy, ofcourse I love Star Wars but some anime ain't misplaced either! :)

I'd say: Less 'Wars. More Trek, 'Gate, Farscape, Batttlestar, Sanctuary, Fringe and, especially, written sci-fi and fantasy!

Don't forget, SF&F books is what started SF conventions in the first place. Not big halls with movie stars and people who want to show props.

Don't do less Star Wars! If anything, get bigger. But I would advice focusing on the expansion of other fandoms first.

The main problem is that there are only a few fandom-groups like you have the 501st (that supply most of the props) in other fandoms than Star Wars. Star Wars fans get together to build and do things. But there are not so many fans of anime and fantasy in Belgium that get together to go to cons...

I do know that there are a few Lord of the Rings fangroups. One from Germany was at the Elf Fantasy Fair in Aachen and they had "Bilbo's birthday" - a few tents in hobbit style and LOTR-sort-of-characters.

There is also a Dutch Lord of the Rings club with people that write the elven language and could write your name in it too - they have appeared on both Elf Fantasy Fairs.

Other than that, I do not know any fandom groups that could provide such entertainment...

Though I would love to do a Harry Potter related boot. There would be fun stuff to organise there; Harry Potter parties are always fun.
Then again, I do have loads of posters, but I don't think a booth should be just posters... It should look more impressive than that.

How about next year all Sw'ers take on all the other SF people... Only weapons , no force use.
That way we decide who rules the next year and so every year , we broadcast payperview LOL
And once the victor is decided ninja's take out those and anime wins :D
Just kidding , would be great to make a feature film with all those cosplayers , a universe where wookie's get attacked by elves and ninja's ;-)
But serious now how about more of everything (including workshops and sake) of all F.A.C.T.S aspects? That way everyone will be happy

:$ feels kinda akward restarting this disscustion...
I just wanted to say that there should be some workshops or something that can entertain people and not only merchandise, celebreties and SF stands.
I wasn't just focusing on japanese stuff.

then another question how much does a stand cost? friends of mine are starting to become interested to open a stand with some kind of workshop.

I agree with the most people here. ^^ I come to facts for almost everything (just not lining up for having a personal conversation/photo with the guests).

Some activities other then games would be nice. Workshops where people can participate are the best, since doing (or watching others do) these is quite good entertainement. ^^ It doesn't even matter so much what the subject is. Although i think Star Wars is well represented already, so anything but that maybe?
