So, who's looking forward to seeing that movie ?
I for one know I am, even if it's with Tom "look at me jump up and down" Cruise ...

I am looking forward to go see it... if only I had the time... I do have a certain respect for Tom (my hair is looking good, isn't it?) Cruise, I like to watch his movies.

I'm in doubt.
I expect the special effects will be awesome and was eager to see it once I heard it was in the making. But when I saw the first trailer and noticed that it was set in our modern time and not in the late 19th century like in Wells' original novel, my doubt began to rise. The idea of defending yourself against a race that's technologically far superior to you (the War machines with their heat rays versus late 19th century cannons and ships) is gone.
Then I learnt Cruise was doing the lead part. Thinking it was to be the part of the reporter (an anti-hero in its purest form), I didn't quite he was suitable for the part. Added to the doubt.
Now that I read previews, I learnt that he plays the role of a divorced father who has to protect his son and daughter, I think that's even worse than having him do a journalist.
I am extremely fond of Jeff Wayne's musical version and the accompanying artwork and I really would not like to see something spoil it. Not even if it has the Spielberg-Cruise stamps all over it.

Well, I've seen it, and I was pleasantly surprised! The special effects are awesome indeed, wow! But the special effects don't make it good. It's the music, the well known but yet frightening sounds the 'tripods' make, the tension and atmosphere that was constantly around... And Cruise did his part, and he did well... The only thing that wasn't quite right, was the end... (typical American) I'm not going to explain, you'll know when you go see it...

The only thing that wasn't quite right, was the end... (typical American) Well Fartor, the end is just like the book, written 100 years ago by an englishman and it was the same as in the first movie adaptation. So for once, the end hasn't been f**cked up by Americans. The thing which me annoyed a lot, was the fact that Tommy boy and his family drove in their car, nicely in the middle of the highway where all the other cars were stopped in a way, that his car could pass. Very unrealistic. In Deep Impact, the hero was at least driving a motorbike to pass all the halted cars which is more realistic.

Very unrealistic. Agreed for the cars. I know that the end (of the tripod family) is true to the book, and that's fine! But I didn't know that the father and son, the whole family actually (including the new husband) found each other at home... seemed a bit too happy ending to me, but hey, that's just me...

I would agree on that bit ... they could as well have the kid die in the movie. He was in a field that was set ablaze for goodness' sake !!!
