Take it from someone who's used to go to LARP weekends:
Rubber coated and wooden swords are just as dangerous. Wooden swords can break a bone and wood can chip off by the blows, causing painful wounds. And rubber swords have a glass-fibre core. You have to fight in a special way with those (90° blows, control the force with which you hit), or you can break and splinter the core and at the worst you can seriously injure someone.
I have been in many fights with rubber weapons, and I can tell you: bleeding knuckles and lots of bruises are VERY common. Actually even more common than with real swords.
These people are used to fighting with those swords and they are well aware of the risks. You automatically use a number of safety moves that are easily forgotten with swords that are considered as "safer".
And as far as I heard that guy is all right
