Hay all,

i'm new here. I'm planning to go this year too. This will be my first comic book convention ever so i'm pretty excited about it.

I also want to try and get one of Adams drawings. any tips on what time i would have to be there to be one of the first in line for this?
BTW, i've seen the movies on YouTube on how difficult it is to get one of these so i know how serious of a challange this will be. still i want to have a shot at it.

how were the conventions before this one? is it cool?

The early brid tickets wil allow you to enter 45 minutes before all the regular visitors and seriously increasing your chances to find that collectible (eg the MJ statue maybe ;D ) you've been hunting for all these years or experience the thrills from FACTS before the big crowd arrives and also you won't lose time by cueing the lines at the tills for your regular ticket
But they are VERY limited from the 1 of july they wil be available and they'l be VERY FAST (with the speed of light) depleted.

SPOTLIGHT ON ... ADAM HUGHES

At today's Spotlight On ... Adam Hughes panel, the comic creator revealed some details about his life in comics, his career so far and teased All-Star Wonder Woman.

The artist, known for his striking cover work, told attendees that he got his start in the comics industry in 1987. "Anybody who could draw a straight line could get a job," he joked. He said he got his start in the '80s comics boom and then worked for Comico on Maze Agency in the black and white boom. "I've only been out of comics for about 15 minutes," he said.

It was when he learned that Maze Agency would go on hiatus that he got the chance to work on the Justice League. "Work has been steady ever since."

Work that has included drawing some of his favorite characters from in and around the world of comics. Hughes is a big fan of Star Wars. He went to London for a Star Wars Celebration and commented, "I got to draw more Star Wars this year than when I was 10."

Hughes has been very busy this year going from convention to convention, trying to get all of his work done and trying to get ahead in All Star Wonder Woman.

Hughes noted that his uncle was one of the people who, when he was a child, taught him some drawing tricks of the trade. His uncle had an art degree with a focus on photography.

Hughes also noted that he discovered Photoshop when he was working at WildStorm and that he hasn't "touched real paint in years." He also said he did some moonlighting for WildStorm FX.

Then the panel was opened up to a Question and Answer session. This reporter tried to get as much of it as possible, but some of this may have been paraphrased.


QUESTION: Do you have any plans to put out a bound book?

ADAM HUGHES: I would love to but, most of my work is work for hire and it is hard to get the rights. Sometimes publishers are not cooperative.

QUESTION: Would you like to work on another tutorial DVD?

ADAM HUGHES: I would love to do more of that. I have done some instruction
sessions and I enjoy them.

QUESTION: Do you have Wonder Woman preliminaries with you?

ADAM HUGHES: I don't have any preliminaries here. I'm keeping everything
"pentagon" secret.

QUESTION: When is the release date for AS WW?

ADAM HUGHES: Not until it's ready. We will have all six issues in the can before I want a solicitation date. I can't control DC comics, but I really want to be on a regular schedule.

My contract doesn't say what order I have to deliver the issues to DC, so I'm not going to hand in issue # 1 first.


QUESTION: Will Wonder Woman have a costume change?

ADAM HUGHES: No. I don't feel the need to make my own changes. I'm going to take the best bits and retell the origin story of Wonder Woman.


When he was doing covers on the Walt Simonson story run, he had to deal with Wonder Woman's haircut and "Um, didn't we just invade another country, isn't there something more significant?"

He wants the fans to have a very iconic image and wants it to attract old fans back. "It's going to look a lot like my covers."

QUESTION: How do you draw the Lasso?

ADAM HUGHES: The bad thing about WW is that she doesn't have a cape.
It's her, her hair, and her lack of pants and a top and cape. Anybody who's seen Spawn knows that capes can be really important.

The lasso is not a "quart of overcooked pasta" and I like to have fun with its shape and design.

QUESTION: Are there any other DC Superheroes in All Star WW.

ADAM HUGHES: No. I don't want to define her relationship to Superman or Batman. I want to show her carving out her own book.

(He made several jokes about Frank Miller's All-Star Batman and Robin. "I don't think I'm old enough to read it")

Hughes wants to do "lots of dark haired women on Paradise Island."



QUESTION: Do you have any other writing credits?

ADAM HUGHES: Gen 13 Ordinary Heroes. I had to convince Dan DiDio that I could write.

QUESTION: Will she have an Invisible Jet? Will Steve Trevor be around?

ADAM HUGHES: I don't like the invisible jet, but I want to put it in the
story somehow. I like Wonder Woman as a character who can fly.

Steve Trevor is in the book. I'm trying to keep Steve cool enough that he could float his own book. He's the quintessential American guy, a cross between young Steve McQueen, Race Bannon and Chuck Yeager.

The idea of a princess from a mystical island ... and her guide to the world of man is a laconic guy.

QUESTION: Who'd you like to draw?

ADAM HUGHES: Captain America. I realize he's dead at the moment.

I have told Joe Quesada Marvel that I would like to do a Cap WWII story.


QUESTION: Will there be variant covers for WW?

ADAM HUGHES: No. I want to do seven covers.

QUESTION: What are you doing with the interior art?

ADAM HUGHES: Pencilling and Inking, and I will consult with Laura Martin
for colors.

QUESTION: Is there an issue with your finished product only existing digitally?

ADAM HUGHES: Brian Bolland is all digital these days. Which horrifies my girlfriend (who sells his art). But for the most part this is not an issue. Just fewer paintings from him. Happy to go all digital for that.

QUESTION: WW the character of Devastation? Catwoman covers, how much
story info?

ADAM HUGHES: Feels that WW does not have a really strong rogue's gallery,
most of her best villains are created by George Perez. The idea of making Devastation a child came from AH. "If she can do this as a six year old, what will she be like when she grows up?"
He gave her a crown of thorns to "piss off the Christians."

But none of the interior artists really could draw her as a child, so she got aged up.

Some times he gets the whole script, but sometimes just a synopsis. He works with the art director at DC, and not the individual editors when it comes to cover ideas and say on what he can or can't do.

"The best Catwoman covers are the ones where they don't bother me." He had lots of fun with the Lone Wolf and Cub homage cover -- his original idea was overruled.

QUESTION: Will the Gods be in A-SWW?

ADAM HUGHES: I don't want to give too much away. I love Perez's take on
that. I'm taking some from that, the Golden Age version, and my own stuff.

QUESTION: The Mary Jane Statue ...?

ADAM HUGHES: Is working on a line for Sideshow. Couldn't do "face it,
Tiger" because Bowen's done it. MJ's job is to get rescued by Spider-Man, but can't really do that either. He wanted to do the moment that MJ found Spidey's costume for the first time.

And it ended up snowballing. "My fate was sealed."

"Why after 20 years would I do something misogynistic?" Talked about how most his career was drawing powerful women superheroes. "If I wanted to do MJ doing laundry, I would've made it something funny."






Gary Sassaman came in at this point to give Adam Hughes his Inkpot Award for achievement in comic arts.
