Impossible to actually follow on TV, but a very good tv-series is "Firefly", which was then followed by the movie "Serenity". They only made 13 episodes and the show got cancelled because Fox TV had various issues with it, a fact which many people up to this day still don't understand.

wasn't Serenity the beginning of the series or did I misunderstand?

It's so much more mature than Doctor Who. It's not only sci-fi but contains also fantasy and horror episodes. There was one episode which scared the hell out of me, even more than recent horror movies did. I'm eagerly awaiting the second season. I start watching Stargate SG-1 but after season 3 I'm still not hooked to it as I was while watching the Star Trek Series. But it's getting more interesting with every episode. Guess I prefer the good old Enterprise to boldly go where no one has gone before instead of the Stargate. Another serie I really loved was Space - Above and Beyond. A pity that it got cancelled after just one season.

Still one season to go get there. Since I plan to see all the seasons, I'm sort of hooked anyway.

Doctor Who is making a good comeback. (I'm also on the board of the Dutch fanclub) Atlantis is still going strong, unfortunately BSG is ending, but those are really good series. Torchwood is one of my favorites, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles is also looking promising. Then there's Eureka, Heroes, The Dresden Files, Lost, and a lot more shows that only took one season... So there's some good TV coming up, but most of it isn't making it to the Benelux tubes yet.

May favorite SF-series: Stargate Sg-1 and Atlantis, 4400, Battlestar Galactica, Serenity.

EUREKA... I am 'getting' that one. But I have limited times so I think I first will watch Heroes, Smallville, Threshold and Painkiller Jane before even getting more series

If you're more into the "retro" I'd like to recommend the collected 1940's serials available on DVD.
I've had a great time watching RADAR MAN FROM THE MOON - the first serial featuring Commando Cody. Great, goofy fun from a much more innocent time.
